Why can't I defrag Eazy Fix protected drives?
Defrag Eazy Fix protected drives is not going to help much.
Eazy Fix is transparent to the Windows OS and applications for security reasons. For example when you are in Snapshot 3, you don't see files from Snapshot 2. When you defrag drives in Snapshot 3, what defragger thinks as the 'white free space" could be data used by Snapshot2. Eazy Fix will not allow defragmenter to move data over the "white free space" (otherwise that will damage Snapshot2); therefore, defragmenter is not doing much.
Eazy Fix has a build-in snapshot defragmenter, we recommend you to use that to defrag the drives protected by Eazy Fix.
Can I defrag the drives protected by Eazy Fix?
Yes but we do not recommend you to defrag the drives protected by Eazy Fix because It's not going to do you any good
Eazy Fix snapshots are transparent to the Windows defragmenter, the defragmenter cannot read or alter Eazy Fix snapshots. So what the defragmenter thinks as the "white free space" could contain data used by other Eazy Fix snapshot.
This is what we recommend:
1. Defrag the disks before installingEazy Fix, so you have a nice and defragged system.
2. Eazy Fix has a build-in snapshot defragmenter, use it to defrag the system. It's fast and it works with Eazy Fix snapshots.
3. If you want to defrag the drives with a third party defragmenter. Uninstall Eazy Fix, defrag the drives and then reinstall Eazy Fix.
How does Eazy Fix support Windows Update and Windows Upgrade?
As a rule of thumb, Eazy Fix supports all Windows update (service pack updates and etc), but it does NOT support Windows upgrades such as going from Windows version 8 to Windows version 10.
Because during a Windows upgrade, there are usually significant changes to the file system or partition tables (bootloader used for the upgrade process). And to make changes to the bootloader and file system, the upgrade process usually need to boot from a PE environment to access them. This action violates one of the Eazy Fix product limitations (Why you should not boot from another O.S. (external media) on a system with Eazy Fix installed?).
In addition, as you might know, Eazy Fix is a “disk utility", it works with and depends on file system and partition tables.
So it is the best to take Eazy Fix out of the system when upgrade makes changes to the files system or partition tables.
But for Windows Update which only copies new files and installs new features of Windows. O.S., Eazy Fix has no problem with the process.
Why you should not boot from another O.S. (external media) on a system with Eazy Fix installed?
One of the Eazy Fix product limitations is Booting From an External Media (OS) – Eazy Fix cannot protect the computer when changes are made to the hard drive from an external or foreign (non-Windows) operating system bypassing Eazy Fix system drivers. For example, booting from a Windows PE CD will start a different OS that may be able to change the hard drive and produce unpredictable results.
We frequently get asked by users why they cannot boot from a PE CD after installing Eazy Fix?
Let’s take a closer look at this limitation with an example:
You have a barebones Windows 10 system.
You install Eazy Fix on the system, the setup creates the Baseline snapshot.
You then install MS Office on the system and create a snapshot Office. The Office snapshot contains Windows 10 and Office.
You then restore the system back to the Baseline snapshot and install Adobe on the system and create a snapshot Adobe. The Adobe snapshot contains Windows 10 and Adobe.
Now if you restore the system back to the Baseline snapshot, you only see Windows 10.
If you restore the system to the Office snapshot, you will see Windows 10 and Office.
If you restore the system to the Adobe snapshot, you will see Windows 10 and Adobe.
All these are obvious and easy to understand, it's what you expect from Eazy Fix.
You also need to understand when you are in the Adobe snapshot, even though you do not see the office files, the files must exist on the hard drive. Because when you restore the system to the Office snapshot, you will see the office files.
The reason you don’t see the office files while in the Adobe snapshot is because those files are not “registered” in the Windows file system. The files only exist in Eazy Fix snapshots.
Each Eazy Fix snapshot is What You See is What You Get (WYSIWYG) at the time of creating the snapshot, and of course each snapshot could have different files.
The reason you can see the office files while you are in the Office snapshot is because Eazy Fix drivers is able to load the files from the snapshot.
Now the question is, if you boot up the system with a bootable Windows 7 PE CD (you are essentially booting a Windows 7 O.S.) and look at the system, what files should you see?
Do you see Windows 10 files (files from the Baseline Snapshot) or office files (files from the Office snapshot) or Adobe files (file from the Adobe snapshot)?
The answer is that you will NOT see any files added to the system after installing Eazy Fix, because those files exists in Eazy Fix snapshots. We need to load Eazy Fix drivers to read the files from snapshots.
When you booted from the Windows 7 PE CD, the system did not boot from the Windows 10 O.S. and therefore Eazy Fix drivers did not load.
Now you have the picture, when you are in the Windows 7 PE environment, you do not see the files in Eazy Fix snapshots but those files DO exist on the hard disk. If you write some information to the disk from the PE environment(even if you do not write anything to the disk, the PE system might write cache or temp files on the disk), there is a chance you could write over the sectors used by the Office and Adobe files contained in the Office and Adobe snapshot and therefore damaging the snapshots!
This is why you should not boot from another O.S. (such as the Windows 7 PE disc) on a system with Eazy Fix snapshots.
