ProfiCAD należy do rodziny programów CAD (ang. computer aided design), które mają zastosowanie w projektowaniu technicznym za pomocą sprzętu i oprogramowania komputerowego. Metodologia CAD znajduje zastosowanie między innymi w inżynierii mechanicznej, elektrycznej, budowlanej czy pneumatyce i hydraulice. Znamienne dla CAD jest cyfrowe modelowanie geometryczne mające na celu opracowanie zapisu konstrukcji wyrobu (jednego obiektu technicznego lub ich układu). Definiowaną postać konstrukcyjną wyrobu tworzą jego cechy geometryczne, dynamiczne i niektóre technologiczne (np. materiałowe).

Projekty są odczytywane i zapisywane w formacie .SXE (ProfiCAD Document File), a eksportować je możemy do formatów BMP, PNG i EMF (Enhanced Windows Metafile – format stosowany w druku przez system operacyjny Windows).
Projekty stworzone w programie można z łatwością przenieść do programu Microsoft Office i innych. Dzięki obsłudze Unicode (komputerowy zestaw znaków mający w zamierzeniu obejmować wszystkie pisma używane na świecie), można wstawić tekst w każdym dowolnym języku. Posiada zintegrowaną bazę około tysiąca symboli usystematyzowanych tematycznie i daje również możliwość tworzenia własnych.
Dla programu dostępne są różne biblioteki elementów, które oferowane są, jako płatne i darmowe. Darmowe można pobrać ze stron internetowych prowadzonych przez osoby wspierające program.
Bezpłatna wersja aplikacji posiada pewne ograniczenia (np. nie obsługuje generowania list materiałowych BOM czy importu i eksportu plików AutoCAD .DXF/.DWG).

Po uruchomieniu wersji portable powinien pojawić się ekran początkowy. Jeśli panel symboli jest pusty, należy ustawić ścieżkę do biblioteki symboli przy użyciu polecenia “F12 – Paths” do folderu “ProfiCAD Library“.

Easier organization of columns in print reports

To edit columns, right-click in the table header. A menu appears that allows you to:
  • add or delete a column
  • move a column left or right
  • set column alignment
  • assign a variable to a column
Each column is assigned a variable. You can change this by using the Column settings menu item.

  • Hyperlinks to local files and web pages
  • Wire cross-references can include the wire name
    • In the program settings (F12 - System - Symbols) you can use the format {ref}/{pa}.{zone} instead of /{pa}.{zone} so that the links also include the wire name.
  • Ability to move wire labels
    • It is possible to move wire labels using the mouse.
  • Conversion of symbols
    • Future versions of the program will no longer support the outdated format in which some symbols were created (prior to version 5).
    • Please convert your symbols to make them compatible with version 11. To start the conversion, choose command File - Convert symbols.
  • Change in terminology
    • Data fields has been renamed to Variables.

  • Sloped connections:
  • You can draw a sloped connection using the Insert - Sloped Connection command.
  • To avoid confusion with a normal (orthogonal) connection, a different cursor is displayed while drawing the connection.
  • Curved connections:
  • You can draw curved connections using a bezier curve (command Draw - Curve). Curved connections cannot be connected to other connections.
  • How to enter the number of a curved connection: in the Properties panel or with the Edit - Renumber Connections function.
  • How to display the curved connection number in the drawing: Select the connection and click the Insert Connection Number link in the Properties panel. You can also display multiple connection numbers.
  • How to remove a curved connection number from the drawing: Select the connection number and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
